POLITICAL LEVERS

What policies for business models?

8 June 2022

In the early stages of a hydrogen economy, it will be important to meet domestic hydrogen demand with domestic generation capacity. However, sufficient climate-compatible generation will only succeed with profitable business models, for which an appropriate political framework is needed. What can this framework look like and how can it be shaped?

Excessively high production costs, a lack of sales markets and inadequate infrastructure are major obstacles to the establishment and ramp-up of a hydrogen economy in Germany. Necessary adjustments to the political framework, as an important prerequisite for profitable business models based on domestic hydrogen production, were therefore the focus of the workshop.

The workshop as part of the H2-Compass stakeholder dialogue

We organised a total of four workshops, with the first one on import criteria held in April 2022. The second workshop in June 2022 focused on political levers and measures suitable for supporting business models based on domestic hydrogen production. The third workshop, also held in June 2022, was dedicated to the prioritisation of hydrogen applications. The fourth workshop on perceptions and expectation management in September 2022 concluded the series.

With our workshop series, we continued the stakeholder dialogue initiated in the fall of 2021 with our survey 'Goals and Paths to the Hydrogen Economy 2030/2050'. Around 600 experts from academia, business, civil society and public administration took part in the survey. In October 2022, we organised a major stakeholder conference in order to further reflect on the workshop results.

Testimonials

"We are in a complex transformation of energy systems that affects countless stakeholders. The H2-Compass project enables stakeholders to discuss together and ultimately contribute to achieving the climate goals in a targeted, moderated manner."

"The workshop was an enriching experience, especially due to the opportunity for exchange with stakeholders from other sectors. Together we were able to gather important points on the required framework conditions and agreed that it will be possible to set the right course for the energy transition if society, politics, academic actors and the companies along the value chains pull together."
